It’s All Good News in Berkeley

Yippee. The new Berkeley Bowl will open in two weeks — despite attempts by some local residents to put back the launch because of unresolved traffic issues.
First homes, now schools. Berkeley’s schools are to be evaluated for their solar-readiness thanks to the sweet receipt of federal grant money.
And, as if that wasn’t enough good news [...]

Solar Tips For Free in Berkeley

It’s President Obama’s 100th day, and Home Girl’s 200th post, so it seems appropriate that we are providing good news today — at least for Berkeley homeowners.
The city has found funds to be able to offer all its residents free solar energy consulting services.
This from the Daily Californian:
The SmartSolar program, a partnership between the city [...]

Berkeley Homes Snapped Up

A little birdie tells me there are four offers on 250 The Uplands, the Italianate estate in Berkeley’s Claremont neighborhood (above) that Home Girl has been following since it went on the market in 2008 for $3.6 million. Its current asking price is $2,495,000.

The mid-century modern home a 33 Edwin Drive in Kensington, reviewed here, [...]

Ticks all Boxes Home in Rockridge

You know how sometimes you just walk around a house and think, “Yes this feels nice. I could live here”. That’s pretty much what went through my mind when I wandered through 5677 Ocean View Drive in the heart of Rockridge. It’s a 3+/2+ traditional Craftsman with a plethora of original fixtures and fittings.
I loved [...]

Look At Me Home in Upper Rockridge

I didn’t expect to like 5272 Golden Gate Avenue, a contemporary home designed and built in 1994 by architect Phillip Perkins for himself.
The exterior facade is imposing and not a little forbidding — although it has to be said this neighborhood, which is quaintly known as Upper Rockridge, is chock full of homes that are [...]

On The Ground: Berkeley

Newly listed at 2 Hazel Road — but really on Claremont Avenue — a 4/2 contemporary (above) with “free” solar heating.

Making Your Home Pay You

I did a double take when I walked by my friend’s house in Berkeley yesterday. The facade of the Prairie style traditional home looked like it had been given a spring-clean, there were planters bursting with red marigolds outside each window and the lilac flowers of a mature wisteria tree draped languorously over the front [...]

Rockridge Declared Ultra Luxe

Matt Woolsey at Forbes is at it again: compiling those compelling league tables about real estate that none of us can really resist if we’re brutally honest (although the laborious and cynical clicking-through demanded on the magazine’s website drives me crazy).
This time it’s America’s Top-Selling Luxury Neighborhoods and our own Rockridge makes it in a [...]

Homes that Speak of Changing Fortunes

This 4/3.5, 4,006 sq ft home at 19 Alvarado Road was bought just eight months ago for $1,806,000. It is now back on the market at a more modest $1,450,000.
I refer you to my On The Block post for more on the homes that make hasty comebacks.

Hush-Hush Hudson Thomas for Sale

I’m always baffled when homes that are for sale are not listed on the MLS. How does that help a seller find a buyer exactly? What’s the purpose of being under the radar so to speak?
I think the John Hudson Thomas designed home at 9 Bridge Road in Berkeley is for sale — because it [...]
