The reason they look that way is that this home at 99 Roble Road, which has just come on the market priced $1,125,000, is Oakland’s only house constructed with straw bales.
This is a great looking home — at least I say that before actually seeing it in the flesh. There are three bedrooms and two bathrooms, a large lot and separate cottage — and it’s in a nice ‘hood, although be aware that freeway noise will probably be a factor to endure.

The walls are downright sculptural. Primal even. Maybe it awakens some ancestral memory of when people lived in caves, or stone houses which also have very thick walls.
