It Doesn’t Get More Berkeley Than This

Garber 1 use

The listing brochure for this new-to-market home at 2830 Garber Street describes it a “quintessential brown-shingle Craftsman”, and that it is.

It’s a style of house that is indelibly associated with Berkeley, too — with those ubiquitous shingles and wood-paneled interiors.  The 3/2.5 home, which is priced at $1,150,000, was designed by architect, and noted etcher, George T. Plowman as his own residence and much of the original period details remain intact, including the inglenook fireplace and built-in window seats.

The kitchen is new and there’s an adjacent sunroom which looks cute. The lower level houses a more modern concept — a large rumpus or media room.

garber 2The home is sited on a section of Garber which is very close to Emerson Elementary School — which means the dulcet tones of children at play will be a given — and also at a point where the street turns into steps leading to a continuation, which itself gives onto Monkey Island, a small park popular with the locals.

One issue with all those wood paneled rooms is light. There’s a conspicuous difference in the quality of light in the living areas — where a certain duskiness is inevitable — and the upstairs spaces which are much brighter. Architectural purists will spurn the suggestion of a lick of white paint — but that’s an issue for the home’s new buyer to ponder.
